What leaders and experts say about the Solano Shipyard—a proposed next-generation shipbuilding complex in East Solano County, across the bay from the industrial waterfront in Pittsburg.
CA State Assemblywoman Lori Wilson, who represents Solano County, said she would “…facilitate discussions at the state and local levels to ensure this project is done expeditiously. Solano County’s rich maritime history and strategic location position it uniquely to help restore America’s shipbuilding strength and enhance California’s role in supporting national security.”
Suisun City Mayor Alma Hernandez said: “Suisun City stands in support of a regional effort to invite the U.S. government and leading defense contractors to invest in Solano County’s future. Our region has a proud history of shipbuilding—it is part of our identity. We are eager to contribute in every way possible to ensure maritime success in our region.”
Vacaville Mayor John Carli said: “…Throughout our history, Solano County has embraced bold visions and has risen to historic moments that demanded courage, vision, and unity… By supporting the establishment of a Solano Shipyard and related maritime industries, we are not merely reviving our historical legacy. We are actively shaping Solano County into the National Security Intermodal Epicenter of the West Coast.”
Solano County Chair of Board of Supervisors Mitch Mashburn, who represents the district that includes the proposed shipyard, said: “It’s a generational chance for the county to recover the losses we had when we lost Mare Island (Navy shipyards).”
Joe Dingman, Chairman, & Sandy Person Executive Director of Travis Community Consortium wrote: “We recognize the strategic importance of enhancing our nation’s shipbuilding capabilities on the West Coast and the economic vitality such a complex would bring to Solano County, including job creation, increased economic activity, and the development of a skilled workforce—all while preserving the mission and Airmen at Travis AFB.”
Danny Bernardini, Business Manager Napa Solano Building Trades: “California Forever’s proposed new commercial and naval shipyard will bring thousands of valuable new jobs for the trades, and bring maritime excellence back to Solano County and the Bay Area. The opportunities for Cal Maritime Academy and Mare Island will be tough to beat, and will ensure their healthy future.”
Jim Wunderman, President of the Bay Area Council said: “This waterfront site zoned for industrial uses since the 1980s has the scale and suitability to be a gamechanger for shipbuilding in America, and for bringing this industry back to the Bay Area. It’s one of the most exciting developments we’ve seen and heard in years.”
Seamus Murphy, CEO of SF Bay Ferry said: “San Francisco Bay Ferry is pleased to support California Forever’s plans to develop a major shipbuilding facility on the waterfront in Solano County. There is a clear need for more shipbuilding capacity to support SF Bay Ferry’s priorities, and locating the facility where it is proposed will offer expanded benefits to the region.”
Dan Dunmoyer, President of the California Building Industry Association wrote: “The California Building Industry Association fully supports the ambitious vision set by California Forever to advance both shipbuilding and housing development. These initiatives are not just about growth—they’re about creating jobs, boosting local economies, and ensuring that Californians have attainable access to housing of all types.”
Bill Dutra, Executive Chairman of The Dutra Group: “As the owner of the Dutra Group, a leading marine construction and dredging company with deep roots in Rio Vista, I strongly support the building of a Solano Shipyard in southeastern Solano County, across the water from the industrial waterfront in Pittsburg.”
Greg Ritchie, Vacaville Council Member said: “This is going to be more than just a local benefit, this will be a pinpoint on a map. Solano County will now be almost like the Phoenix rising… Every single city existing in our county and our region will be able to have a tangible net benefit. We need to be a united front. We need to all stand-up shoulder to shoulder and move forward.”
